Richmond upon Thames

Council for Voluntary Service

Carers' Grant

The Carers’ Grant is an annual fund made available by Department of Health to support Carers in the UK. It was introduced in 1999. Each local authority receives a proportion of this funding which is then used to fund a range of services that respond to the needs of carers. The main focus of the Carers Grant is to provide breaks to carers from their caring role.

Richmond Council for Voluntary Service administers a large proportion of the grant the grant on behalf of the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, and Chairs the quarterly Carers Grant Panel meetings. The Carers Grant Panel consists of representatives from the local authority and the voluntary sector, all of whom have experience of carer related issues.

In 2005/06 the amount of funding available was £617,000. In 2006/07 the amount is £600,000.

A new initiative that is being funded is the Carers Voucher Scheme, which provides vouchers to carers who are eligible following a carers assessment. Carers then have the freedom to redeem these vouchers against a wide range of service providers.
